Funding Education in Bulacan
The Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (PAGCOR) has committed a Php60-million scholarship fund to support 2,000 students from low-income families in Bulacan. According to PAGCOR, the state gaming regulator released an initial Php10-million tranche to the provincial government of Bulacan on Monday, July 6, during a turnover ceremony at the Bulacan Capitol Gymnasium in Malolos City.
PAGCOR Chairman and CEO Alejandro H. Tengco led the turnover of the initial grant to Bulacan Governor Daniel Fernando and Vice Governor Alexis Castro. The funding will support the Ayudang Hatid ay Tagumpay (AHT) Scholarship Program, which aims to expand access to higher education and technical-vocational training for deserving Bulakenyo youth.
Allocation and Broader Community Initiatives
The state regulator detailed that the Php60-million allocation will be split to address different educational paths. Specifically, Php40 million will fund scholarships for 1,000 incoming college freshmen enrolled in four-year degree programs. The remaining Php20 million will support another 1,000 students pursuing technical-vocational education.
During the event, Chairman Tengco emphasized that PAGCOR’s role extends beyond regulating gaming operations and generating government revenues. He stated that PAGCOR was established to curb illegal gambling and to return its earnings to the public through programs that aid Filipinos and contribute to nation-building.
In addition to the scholarship fund, Chairman Tengco announced that PAGCOR will fund the construction of 10 three-story school buildings in Bulacan, as well as the establishment of the Bulacan Sports Academy for young athletes. Governor Fernando expressed gratitude for the assistance, noting that the program will help deserving students pursue their studies despite financial constraints.
